In the vast expanse of the Lone Star State, there’s a pulse of energy that fuels not just our vehicles and homes, but also our economy and way of life. Texas oil and natural gas, the lifeblood of our state, are inextricably linked to our prosperity, innovation, and energy security. As we navigate the intricate web of energy politics and policy, one thing remains crystal clear: the power to shape our future lies in the hands of every Texan who casts their vote.

In the latest episode of the Texas Oil & Gas Association’s (TXOGA) podcast TXOGA Talks, Todd Staples, the President of TXOGA, sat down with Shana Joyce, the Director of Government & Regulatory Affairs at TXOGA, to discuss the critical intersection of energy and politics. Staples likened the excitement of early voting, which ends March 1, to the fervor of the Super Bowl, emphasizing its profound significance for our collective future.

There is nothing a Texan can do that’s more patriotic to support our state than head to the ballot box. “Engaging in politics is as American as apple pie and baseball,” Staples said, echoing the sentiment that participation in the political process is not just a right but a responsibility. Joyce had a similar take, declaring that “being involved in politics is like the Liberty Bell or the Fourth of July.”

From local races to statewide elections, every vote shapes the trajectory of our communities and industries, including the vital oil and gas sector. We must heed Joyce’s call to action, “I encourage everyone that’s listening today to really focus on three people that might not vote, make sure they do vote in the primary, and you can make a difference.”

The conversation delved into the statistics of voter turnout, revealing a concerning trend of low engagement particularly in primaries. Despite the immense impact of elections on issues like energy infrastructure, tax rates, education, and law enforcement, a significant portion of registered voters remains disengaged. Staples and Joyce underscored the urgency of turning the tide, highlighting the tangible difference that each vote can make in determining the course of our state and nation.

But beyond sheer numbers, the need for pro-energy advocacy in the political arena has never been more pressing. Staples cautioned against complacency in the face of emerging challenges, citing federal policies that threaten to stifle energy production and jeopardize energy security. From burdensome regulations to misguided notions about the role of fossil fuels, the landscape is fraught with obstacles that demand proactive engagement from industry stakeholders and supporters.

In the realm of energy policy, every vote counts, and every voice matters. Whether advocating for sensible regulations that balance environmental stewardship with economic growth or championing initiatives to bolster energy infrastructure and innovation, the ballot box is the ultimate arbiter of our energy future. With early voting already underway and the Tuesday, March 5 primary election just around the corner, Texans have a pivotal opportunity to shape the destiny of our state, reaffirming our commitment to energy excellence and prosperity.

In the words of Todd Staples, “If you care about the quality of services you have, whether it’s schools, roads, or law enforcement, it’s imperative to exercise your right to vote.” The time is now to harness the power of the ballot and ensure that Texas remains a beacon of energy leadership for generations to come. Cast your vote as soon as possible – early voting ends on Friday, March 1.
