Earlier this week at a protest in San Antonio, Sierra Club employee Greg Harman perpetuated a long-time lie of the Environmentalist Left in Texas. Harman falsely claimed that natural gas development was the top source of ozone pollution in San Antonio:

“And these rising ozone levels in our city greatly contribute to asthma attacks and other health problems in our majority Latinx/Native identified city. The number one source of ozone is fracking in the Eagle Ford Shale. The construction of the Rio Grande LNG terminal would demand more fracking in the Eagle Ford of South Texas.”

A quick look at data shows that not only is Harman and the Sierra Club wrong, their data is off by a longshot. A report from the Alamo Area Council of Governments indicates that the Eagle Ford Shale is responsible for a mere 3% of ozone emissions in the San Antonio Region, with cars and trucks the true number one cause of ozone emissions in the area, emitting ten times more nitrogen oxide than the Eagle Ford Shale.

This is just the latest example of environmentalists spreading debunked claims in opposition to proposed natural gas export terminals along the Gulf coast. The Sierra Club’s flip-flop on natural gas must have left them no choice but to produce false claims to fit their new stance.
