As environmental activists spread misleading claims aiming to halt pipeline construction and energy development in the Rio Grande Valley, the Texas oil and gas industry is continuing to contribute more than just jobs and revenue.

At a ceremony on South Padre Island last week, Enbridge Inc.’s Valley Crossing Pipeline LLC donated $350,000 to RGV Reef, an artificial reefing project that aims to increase the populations of red snapper and other fish near the island.

Democratic Cameron County Precinct 1 Commissioner Sofia Benavides celebrated the oil and gas industry’s desire to give back to the Rio Grande Valley beyond the mere economic boost of their nearly-completed $1.5 billion natural gas pipeline:

“When Valley Crossing first came, probably about 18 months ago, they wanted me to know about what they were doing in the area, and also they were looking to give back to the community.”
