Texas is now an exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG), as the Houston-based Cheniere Energy shipped out its first tanker from the Port of Corpus Christi yesterday. While the destination of the tanker – named the Maria Express – is unknown, this marks the first shipment from the several proposed LNG export facilities along the coast.
Discussing this milestone, Cheniere’s President and CEO stated:
“Exporting the first commissioning cargo of LNG from Texas demonstrates Cheniere’s ability to deliver projects safely and ahead of schedule, including the first greenfield LNG export facility in the lower 48 states.”
Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the impact such LNG exports would have on Texas:
“The Lone Star State continues to lead the nation in natural gas production, and today’s announcement is another historic development for the Texas energy industry. Cheniere’s first LNG shipment from Texas represents years of hard work and collaboration that not only benefits our state’s economy, but also unleashes Texas energy to the rest of the world.”
The projects have gained broad, bipartisan support from political leaders and the Corpus Christi community. Despite this support, some on the Environmentalist Left have campaigned against the LNG export facilities using false and misleading claims.
