Last night, Enviro-backed Texas State Rep. René Oliveira (D-Brownsville) was defeated in a primary runoff by challenger Alex Dominguez by a double-digit margin after coming up just 1.6% of the vote shy of avoiding a runoff in the March primary.
Earlier this week, the extreme environmentalist group Save RGV From LNG endorsed Oliveira, citing his opposition to proposed a LNG export terminal that will create thousands of jobs and inject billions of dollars into the local economy.
Oliveira’s Save RGV From LNG’s endorsement came just weeks after he was arrested and charged with DWI. The group blatantly ignored the troubling details related to his arrest:
“According to the police report, Oliveira had left Cobbleheads after eating dinner and having a “few” drinks when he crashed his black Cadillac into a vehicle that was stopped at a traffic light. ‘(She) stated that she observed the defendant stumble out of his vehicle and approach her. She stated that after checking if she was okay, he told her that he would take care of everything, and for her to contact his insurance, giving her his business card with only his name and business address,’ the police report states. Oliveira would not tell officers how many alcoholic drinks he had that night, police documents show.”
